BrambleHire › How to recruit caregivers
How to recruit caregivers for a home care agency
A practical playbook from people who spend all day on caregiver recruiting. No fluff, just what moves the number of people who show up to orientation.
1. Put the pay and shifts in the first line
Caregivers compare jobs by hourly rate, schedule and drive time. If your ad makes them click to find the pay, most won't. Write "$17 to $19 an hour, weekends and overnights available, clients near you" before anything about your mission.
2. Go where caregivers already are
Job boards reach people who are searching today. The larger group is caregivers who have a job but would switch for a better one. You find them on Facebook and Instagram, through referrals from your current staff, and in local community groups.
A referral bonus paid after the new hire's first 60 or 90 days is one of the cheapest sources you have. Remind your caregivers about it often.
3. Make applying take about a minute
Long applications kill volume. Every extra page loses people, especially on a phone. Ask for the basics and a few screening questions up front, then collect the full application after the phone screen.
4. Screen for must-haves inside the application
Decide what's a dealbreaker for you. It's usually certification, reliable transportation and availability. Ask those as simple multiple-choice questions so your recruiter can sort the list before calling anyone.
5. Call back the same day
This is the step agencies skip most. A caregiver who applied at lunch has often applied to other places too. The first agency to call usually gets the interview. Block time every day for callbacks, and text if there's no answer.
6. Keep the ones you hire
Median yearly caregiver turnover in home care is around 75% (Activated Insights, 2025 Home Care Benchmarking Report). Recruiting gets a lot cheaper when fewer people leave. The basics help most: consistent clients, predictable schedules, pay on time and a real person who answers when they call the office.

Common questions
What's the best place to find caregivers?
A mix works best: referrals from current staff, Facebook and Instagram ads that reach people who aren't actively searching, and job boards for people who are.
How quickly should we contact caregiver applicants?
The same day, ideally within a few hours. Caregivers often apply to several agencies at once, and the first one to call usually gets the interview.
What should a caregiver job ad include?
Hourly pay, available shifts, the area you serve, the certification you need and a one-tap way to apply. Put pay and shifts first.
